NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale
won all six matches it competed in on the first day of the
Connecticut State Championships at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center
at Yale University.
In singles play, four Yale singles players won
matches to advance to the round of 16. Sophomore Erik Blumenkranz
defeated Fairfield's Mike Lessing 6-2, 7-6. Senior Matt Schimmell cruised to
a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jinal Shah of Sacred Heart.
Freshman Daniel Hoffman rolled to a 6-0, 6-0
win over Sacred Heart's Mike Syer. Junior Ryan Berman won 6-1, 6-4
against Hartford's Marco Neves to advance as well.
In doubles play, Schimmel and Berman defeated
UConn's Cardona and Burns 8-6 in the round of 16 to advance
to the quarterfinals.
The doubles team of Blumenkranz and Hoffman defeated Ujick and Shah
of Sacred Heart University 8-2 to also advance to the
quarterfinals.
