NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bulldogs completed a
successful first day at the Yale Invitational that went to all
hours of the night as a result of inclement weather that
forced the tournament indoors.
In the 'A' Singles Draw, both senior Connor Dawson and
junior Calvin Bennett won their first round matches in straight
sets. Bennett rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Diego
Valdenegro. Dawson defeated Army's Tripp Johnson 6-2,
6-2.
Sophomores Erik Blumenkranz and Joel Samaha won first round
matches in the 'B' Singles Draw. Blumenkranz cruised to
a 6-1, 6-4 win over Maryland's Sergio Wyss. Samaha won 6-1,
6-1 over Army's Alex Holland.
In the 'C' Singles Draw, Ryan Berman, Jordan Abergel, and
Matt Schimmel all won their first round matches. Schimmel won
6-1, 6-3 over Juan Garcia. Abergel defeated Luis Guevara in
straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Berman squeaked by 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-4
against Army's Rashad Shelton.
In doubles play, Bennett and Samaha won 8-3 in the 'A'
Doubles Flight. The doubles team of Dawson and freshman Marc
Powers rolled to an 8-1 victory in the 'B' Doubles
Flight. Also in the 'B' Doubles Flight, the duo of
Blumenkranz and freshman Daniel Hoffman won 8-4. Schimmel and
Berman rolled to an 8-6 victory in the 'C' Doubles
Flight. Also in the 'C' Doubles Flight, freshman John
Huang and Abergel rolled to an 8-2 win.
