Yale Wins 400-yard Medley Relay, Second Overall
BOSTON, Mass. - The Bulldogs opened the Terrier
invitational with a strong showing, taking second in most events
and winning the 400-yard medley relay. Boston University
currently leads the invitational, with 240 points after claiming
first place in most of the day's events. The Bulldogs are
right behind them in second with 221 points.
Morning Session
In the morning preliminaries, the Bulldogs managed to get
multiple swimmers into each A final. The morning got started
with the 500-yard freestyle where freshman Joan Weaver and
sophomore Abigail Nunn finished in second and fourth place,
respectively. They each earned a spot in the A final with
Weaver finishing in a time of 4:59.45 and Nunn with a time of
5:00.35. Juniors Annie Killian and Ileana Lucos earned places
in the B and C finals, respectively.
Following the 500-yard freestyle was the 200-yard IM where
sophomore Hayes Hyde and Nunn both earned spots in the A
final. Hyde finished in second place with a time of 2:08.45,
just .35 seconds behind first place. Nunn finished .01
seconds behind Hyde in third with a time of 2:08.46. Yale
also placed three swimmers in the B final. Sophomore Athena
Liao and freshmen Molly Albrecht and Monica Tung all made it into
the night session.
The strongest showing of any Bulldog in the morning came from
freshman Alex Forrester who took first in the 50-yard freestyle
preliminary with a time of 23.12. Also earning a spot in the A
final was freshman Cynthia Tsay who took sixth with a time of
23.81. Junior Andrea Clifford and sophomore Emily Dominski
both earned spots in the B final.
Night Session
The Bulldogs opened the night session with the 200-yard
freestyle relay. Forrester got Yale off to a strong start
taking the lead by .66 seconds. Tsay was able to keep up the
momentum on the second leg, but Clifford and Dominski got
overpowered in the third and fourth legs, respectively. Yale
finished in second behind BU with a time of 1:34.96. Yale's B
team came in 13th with a time of 1:41.51. That
team was comprised of Weaver, Hyde, Lucos and Liao.
In the first of the individual finals, Weaver took second in the
500-yard freestyle, narrowly missing out on first. Her time
of 4:57.93 was just a 1.59 seconds slower than Amanda Schmitz from
BU. Nunn also scored points for Yale taking sixth with a time
of 5:00.91. In the B final, Killian took eighth for
16th overall with a time of 5:16.47. Lucos also
scored points taking 21st overall with a time of
5:10.97.
The Bulldogs had two swimmers in the 200-yard IM final.
Hyde took fifth for the Bulldogs with a time of 2:08.21. Nunn
who was swimming in back-to-back events took seventh with a time of
2:11.07. Liao and Tung competed in the B final taking
10th and 13th overall, respectively.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Forrester could not maintain her lead
from the morning and took second to Maria McIntyre from BU by .04
seconds. Forrester's time was 23.04. Tsay also competed in
the A final taking seventh with a time of 24.08. In the B
final, Emily Dominski swam a time of 23.76 for ninth overall.
She would have placed seventh in the A final. Clifford took
16th overall with a time of 24.51.
The final event of the day was also the Bulldogs only
victory. Yale took first in the 400-yard medley relay.
Dominski got things started for the Bulldogs and she was followed
by junior Susan Kim, Forrester, and Tsay. Yale finished the
race in a time of 3:46.40. Yale's B team also performed
excellently, taking fourth place with a time of 3:54.41
The Bulldogs will be back in the pool tomorrow morning for
preliminaries in the 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard
freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke.
