Remain Undefeated in Duals and Ivy League
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bulldogs came into
Philadelphia undefeated in the Ivy League, and they leave exactly
the same way. Yale faced Penn and Dartmouth, but neither
managed to put up much of a fight. The Bulldogs defeated
the Quakers by a score of 204.5-95.5 and the Big Green by a score
of 234-66. The Bulldogs won the first 13 swimming events of
the meet, only falling in the final 400-yard freestyle relay.
Overall, Yale won 13 out of 16 events, as Dartmouth managed to
claim both diving events. The Bulldogs improved to 6-0 in
dual meets and 4-0 in the Ivy League.
The Bulldogs opened the meet strongly with a victory in the
200-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Molly Albrecht,
junior Susan Kim, freshman Alex Forrester and freshman Cynthia Tsay
won the event in a time of 1:46.38. They defeated Penn's A
team by 2.16 seconds.
Freshman Joan Weaver and sophomore Abigail Nunn finished one-two
in the 1000-yard freestyle. Weaver won the event by almost
four seconds, but Nunn had to fight to inch out second. She
defeated Blair Webb of Penn by only 0.02 seconds. Junior
Annie Killian and freshman Margaret Brown took fourth and fifth, as
Yale took four out of the top five spots in the event.
Forrester won three individual events on the day. In the
200-yard freestyle, she took first over Stephanie Nerby and Andrea
Balint of Penn by 4.34 seconds. Her time was 1:49.59.
She also dominated the 50-yard freestyle event, taking first by
0.79 seconds, when the next four swimmers were only separated by
0.51 seconds. Her time in that event was 23.56. To
finish out her day, she won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of
51.22.
Kim also put up another dominant performance, winning three
individual events. Kim won the 100-yard breaststroke with a
time of 1:02.47. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Kim won by a
staggering 8.46 seconds. Her time was 2:12.17, while
sophomore Athena Liao was in second at 2:20.63. Kim's final
victory of the day came in the 200-yard IM, where she defeated
Ballint of Penn with a time of 2:05.90.
Albrecht took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of
58.23. She was joined at the top by Tsay as the only two
swimmers to finish under one minute in the event. Albrecht
also took the 200-yard backstroke event with a time of 2:04.24,
where Tsay was once again right behind her at 2:06.70.
The Bulldogs swept the 200-yard butterfly as sophomore Ileana
Lucos, freshman Monica Tung, and sophomore Hayes Hyde took first,
second and third, respectively. Lucos finished with a time of
2:05.34. Tung and Hyde were closely behind her with times of
2:05.44 and 2:05.60, respectively.
In the 100-yard butterfly, it was Hyde's turn to take the top
spot. She finished with a time of 57.93. Tung took
second with a time of 58.52 and Lucos took fourth.
Weaver won her second distance event of the day when she took
the 500-yard freestyle. Her time was 5:01.42.
The Bulldogs could not win either diving event, but they took
second and third in both cases. In the one-meter diving,
freshman Paige Menses took second with a score of 245.50 and
sophomore Rachel Rosenberg took third with a score of 238.45.
In the three-meter diving, it was once again Menses and Rosenberg
taking second and third. They finished with scores of 258.85
and 246.96, respectively.
The Bulldogs will face Navy on Jan. 23, as they take a break
from Ivy League competition.
