NEW HAVEN, Conn. - In its first home meet of
the year, the Yale gymnastics team defeated an Ivy League opponent
for the second straight week, beating Penn 187.775-179.600. Yale
gymnasts won every individual event as well as the all-around
competition. Several Bulldogs posted career bests, including
freshman Tara Feld, who recorded a 9.850 on the vault, the best
score in Yale history. Coach Barbara Tonry was pleased with the
results.
“They did an outstanding job today,” said Tonry.
“They're starting to believe in themselves about
hitting their ratings for the first time.”
On the vault, the Bulldogs performed better as a team than they
had at either of their first two competitions, posting the
meet's three best scores. In addition to Feld's school
record 9.850, seniors Brigitte Kivisto and Allison Mak scored a
9.725 and a 9.600 respectively.
On the uneven parallel bars, Yale took the top four places.
Kivisto led the team with a 9.550, while Feld scored a 9.525,
another career best. Freshmen Stephanie Goldstein and Lindsay
Andsager scored a 9.125 and a 9.100 to round out the top four.
On the balance beam, which Tonry sees as a “focus
point” for the Bulldogs' future, Yale took the top two
spots, with Mak scoring a 9.825 and Kivisto scoring a 9.750. Junior
Sherry Yang was the only other Bulldog to score a 9.100 or above,
finishing sixth.
In the floor exercise, three Yale gymnasts achieved career bests
as the Bulldogs obtained the top six places. Kivisto won with a
9.850, the best score of her four-year Yale career. Sophomore Talis
Trevino posted a career best as well, finishing second with a
9.650. She was followed by Mak, Goldstein, and Yang, who scored a
9.425, a 9.400 and a 9.050 respectively. Feld tied Yang for fifth
place with a career-best 9.050.
Kivisto also had a personal best in the all-around competition,
finishing first with a 38.875. Mak and Feld were shortly behind
with a 37.450 and a 37. 425, placing second and third.
The Bulldogs travel across town next Saturday, Feb. 6 for a meet
with local foe Southern Connecticut State and Ithaca. The
competition begins at 1:00 p.m.
