NEW HAVEN, Conn. - With a score of 186.925, the
Yale gymnastics team finished second of five at a meet hosted by
Southern Connecticut State. The Bulldogs bested their cross-town
rival by 0.175 points, falling only to Bridgeport, who won the
competition with a score of 189.600. Yale also defeated Ithaca and
Rhode Island College at the meet.
In the all-around competition, Yale was paced by freshman Tara
Feld, the reigning ECAC Rookie of the Week. Feld finished second
overall with a score of 38.100, the best score of her four-meet
career. She was followed by senior captain Brigitte Kivisto, last
week's ECAC Gymnast of the Week, who finished fourth with a
37.275. Freshman Stephanie Goldstein also had a career best,
earning a fifth-place finish with a 37.175. Senior Allison Mak also
competed in all four events, scoring a 36.875 and placing seventh.
Yale began the day on the balance beam, the only event of the
day in which the Bulldogs did not have a top-three finisher. Mak
placed fifth with a 9.450, while Goldstein and Kivisto scored a
9.250 and a 9.200 respectively.
After a slow first event for the Bulldogs, two of the top three
spots in the floor exercise were taken by Yale gymnasts. Feld led
the way with a personal-best 9.650, finishing second, and sophomore
Talis Trevino placed third with a 9.550. Shortly behind was
Goldstein, who scored a 9.450.
As usual, the vault was the Bulldogs' strongest event in
terms of total score, with Feld, who broke the Yale record on the
vault against Penn, finishing second with a 9.750. Kivisto placed
fourth with a 9.650 and Mak scored a 9.400.
In its final event, the uneven parallel bars Yale showed
improvement over previous weeks, collectively recording its best
score of the season. Feld won the event with a career-best 9.700
while Kivisto and freshman Lindsay Andsager both scored a 9.500.
Goldstein also broke 9.000, scoring a 9.250.
The Bulldogs return home next Saturday, Feb. 13, for a meet with
Springfield College. Competition begins at 1:00 p.m. at
Yale's John J. Lee Amphitheater.
