Team Wins Narrow Race
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bulldogs took back
the trophy at their annual Harvard-Yale dual meet, defeating
Harvard at home by 10 points. Battling the unusual fall humidity,
they carried out the race plan that head coach Dan Ireland had
given them before the meet.
"I told our guys that we would beat them in the last five
minutes in the race," Ireland said.
At the four-mile marker, the Crimson was still winning the race,
running in first, second and third positions. Senior Jeff
Perrella then passed the Crimson's second and third
runners to cross the line first for the Bulldogs in second place
overall (25:35.53). The pair of sophomore Julian
Sheinbaum and junior Sam Lynch
returned their impressive performances from their last meet by
passing the Crimson's runners with only 400 meters to go and
finished second (25:39.45) and third (25:40.30), respectively.
Junior Conor
Dooney led the next pack of Bulldogs to place seventh
(25:57.52), followed by senior captain Max
Walden in eighth (26:02.92) and sophomore Nathan
Richards in ninth (26:07.67). Freshman Blake
Hofmeister also had an impressive race as the
Bulldogs' seventh runner in 11th place overall
(26:19.04).
The Bulldogs finished the meet with 34 points. The Crimson's
Daniel Chenoweth, the Ivy League Heptagonals champion from last
season, won the individual title in 25:10.70, setting a new meet
record.
The Bulldogs' victory over their long-standing rival sets them
on a good foot for the rest of the season.
"It's still really early in the season but to get this win in is
good for them," Ireland said.
The Bulldogs will take next weekend off from competition to
train for the New England Championships on Oct. 9.
