Team Wins Every Set Against Golden Knights
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Tuesday saw the Yale women's tennis team achieve its highest ranking in school history, as the Bulldogs moved up to No. 23 in the country from No. 28. On Wednesday, they began positioning themselves for another move up by registering a decisive 7-0 sweep of Army at Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. Yale did not drop a set as it won for the seventh match in a row.
Wednesday's dominant performance moved Yale to 10-2 in the spring, and the Bulldogs remain undefeated at Cullman-Heyman. The day began with three wins in doubles, including an 8-0 win at No. 2 by junior Stephanie Kent and freshman Annie Sullivan. The No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Blair Seideman and Kim Szokol won 8-2, and the No. 1 doubles team of junior Vicky Brook and senior Lindsay Clark won 8-3.
Singles play was highlighted by Seideman winning every game of her match at No 3 for a tidy 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Brook (at No. 1) and Kent (at No. 4) dropped only two games in their sweeps, and No. 88 sophomore Elizabeth Epstein dropped only three games in her sweep at No. 2. Sullivan and senior captain Stevi Petrelli added wins at the No. 6 and No. 5 spots respectively.
Petrelli has now won eight matches in a row, while Epstein and Sullivan have seven-match winning streaks.
Yale puts its winning streak on the line with a trip south for spring break that includes matches at Georgia State and No. 11 Georgia, along with a neutral-site match vs. No. 57 Purdue. After that Yale has one more tune-up against a pair of non-league foes (FDU and Quinnipiac) on Mar. 27 before Ivy League play starts. Brown, at No. 37, is the only other league team ranked in the top 40.
