DERBY, Conn. – It doesn't get much better for the Yale varsity eight. The Bulldogs knocked off two of their biggest rivals in a three-day span. After edging Radcliffe on Saturday, Yale cruised to a nearly nine-second victory over Brown in a rare Monday race on the Housatonic River.
Yale's victory in the first and second varsity eights allowed the Bulldogs to win the Nat & Anne Case Cup for the second straight year.
The varsity eight turned in a dominating performance, finishing with a time of 6:49.5. Brown crossed the line in 6:58.1.
The second varsity eight finished in 6:58.9, a little over two seconds faster than the Bears.
The closest race of the day came in the varsity four where Brown edged the Bulldogs by one second, 7:40.3 to 7:41.3.
"We raced well today," said Yale head coach Will Porter. "In the first and second varsity, we are still working on rowing a complete race. Today was our best effort yet but we could still do a few things better. The varsity four is improving every time out. We just need to shave a few more seconds off our time."
Yale won the second varsity four by a wide margin, while the Bears captured the third varsity eight handily.
The Bulldogs have one more race before the Ivy League championship. They host Rhode Island on May 11.
"It was a good weekend for us, but we have more work ahead of us," Porter said.
