Box Score Red Takes 3-2 Game in ECAC
ITHACA, N.Y. – Yale's two-game win streak came to an end on a night when it outshot Cornell 34-21 and carried much of the play. The Bulldog men's hockey team fell 3-2 to the Big Red before a packed house at Lynah Rink in ECAC play.
Yale (3-2-2, 2-2-1 ECAC), on the road for a third straight game, had a 1-0 lead before playing catch-up most of the second half of the contest. Alex Lyon made 18 saves, including 10 in a busy opening frame.
The game's first three goals came on the advantage. Yale scored the first and Cornell answered with the next two.
John Hayden, who was back on the ice after missing the last game, notched his second of the year when he converted a feed from Tommy Fallen at 6:45 of the first period. The Big Red penalty-killers migrated to one side of the zone and left Hayden open for a slap shot.
The power-play opportunity came courtesy of hard work by Matt Killian behind the Cornell cage. He won the battle for a loose puck and held off Big Red defenders before they tied him up and drew a whistle.
The Blue outshot Cornell 13-5 in the second and had many quality chances. However, Mitch Gillam came up with big saves and allowed his teammates to take tie the score and take the lead.
Yale had a power play to start the third period but could not find the net.
Soon after the missed opportunity on the advantage, the Big Red goalie got a little too aggressive and it cost the home team early in the third. Gilliam, who had the puck behind his cage, was a bit indecisive and didn't move the puck away from an attacker. Ryan Obuchowski grabbed it and threw it in front and the puck bounced off the goalie and into the net as Gillam tried to recover from his mistake.
Cornell got the winner at the 12:58 mark on a shot from the slot that zipped through traffic. It appeared that the Eli goalie got screened.
The Bulldogs battled to get another equalizer but could not get many grade-A chances the rest of the way. Lyon was pulled with a minute left, but the Big Red cleared the puck every time they got a stick on it in their zone.
Yale is back in action Saturday night at Starr Rink in Hamilton to face a nationally ranked Colgate (9-3-0) team that beat Brown tonight 4-3 in overtime.
