SLU Takes 4-0 Decision at Whale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The first weekend of conference play produced one point as the Yale men's hockey finished it with a 4-0 loss to St. Lawrence before a full house at the Whale. Four different players scored for St. Lawrence (5-3-1, 2-0-0) and Kyle Hayton stopped 32 shots to earn the shutout.

The Bulldogs (1-1-2, 0-1-1 ECAC) put more (32-19) rubber on Hayton than the Saints did on Yale's combination of sophomore goalies, but nothing was clicking tonight.

"Sometimes you have to give the other team credit and I certainly didn't like the way we played tonight," said Keith Allain '80, Yale's Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach.

Yale had a 9-8 edge in shots on target in the first, but that meant nothing because SLU scored three times, including two at even strength. The Saints capitalized on every opening the home team allowed while the Bulldogs were unable to finish their quality chances.

"All the credit to St. Lawrence, they're a great team," said Yale captain Tommy Fallen. "We've got to tighten up a little bit, focus on the details and execute more efficiently."

The Elis, who skated to a 2-2 OT tie with Clarkson the night before, dominated in shots (12-3) and puck possession in the second but could not find the net during a scoreless period. Patrick Spano, who replaced Alex Lyon (5 saves) after the first frame, made three stops.

"I thought we had a little burst in the second, but to be honest I don't think we did anything well. We didn't make a play, we didn't win a puck battle, we weren't skating. There was nothing to like about our hockey game tonight," said Allain.

More of the same (11-8) in the final frame, and more close calls for the Blue, who take to the road next weekend with games at Dartmouth and Harvard.

"I believe we'll be better, but time will tell," said the Yale coach.

BULLDOG BITES: There was one change in the lineup from last night with John Baiocco replacing freshman classmate Henry Hart at forward… John Hayden had the most (7) shots on goal of any Bulldog.
