Faierman Surges to Comeback Win; Lu Notches 16th Singles Victory
PROVIDENCE, R. I. — In its final match of the 2013-14 season, the Yale men's tennis team lost to Brown in a 5-2 decision. Playing at the Bears' home courts, the Bulldogs narrowly dropped the doubles point, and then were unable to complete a comeback in singles. Despite the loss, there were a few season-ending bright spots for the Elis.
In doubles, Brown got off to a quick start with an 8-2 win at the No. 3 spot. The other two doubles matches saw high-quality encounters, with each team securing one win. Senior Patrick Chase and senior captain Kyle Dawson showed their characteristic resiliency in their last match together as Bulldogs, but were unable to come away with the victory. While the Bears had clinched the doubles point, the Bulldogs' top team of freshman Tyler Lu and sophomore Martin Svenning put Yale on the board with an 8-5 win over Brown's top duo of Greg Garcia and Daniel Hirschberg.
Yale refused to yield in its season finale, and Lu, ranked No. 106 in the nation, initiated a comeback with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Justin To. Brown stymied Yale's momentum when William Spector defeated Svenning at No. 2 singles. The Bears solidified their lead with a victory at the No. 5 position. The Elis still would not stand down, however, and made one last push when junior Daniel Faierman completed a 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles. Nonetheless, a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win by Brandon Burke over Dawson at No. 4 singles clinched the victory for the Bears.
With the loss, Yale ends the season in a tie with Brown at No. 7 in the Ivy League standings. Despite dropping its last five matches, Yale finishes the season with a winning 12-10 overall record.
