Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Entering Saturday afternoon's game vs. Brown at Ingalls Rink, the Yale women's ice hockey team had outshot its opponent four times in the previous five games (putting a total of 174 shots on net), but had only one win to show for it. That trend was due to change, and that was exactly what happened Saturday -- at Brown's expense. Yale's offense resumed the potent form it had shown earlier in the season -- including scoring three goals in a span of 26 seconds in the first -- as the Bulldogs blasted the Bears 6-3. Sophomore defenseman Taylor Marchin led Yale with a pair of goals.
"For the last four or five games we have liked the way we've played," said Yale head coach Joakim Flygh. "It had not paid dividends on the scoreboard, and we had too many mental lapses defensively that cost us games. Today was a good response after a disappointing loss yesterday."
The scoring came early and often for Yale (9-11-1, 6-8-0 ECAC Hockey), as 38 seconds into the game sophomore forward Phoebe Staenz backhanded a pass from the right circle to senior forward Jackie Raines in front for a 1-0 lead. Junior forward Hanna Åström also assisted on the play.
Brown (5-16-0, 2-12-0 ECAC Hockey) momentarily tied the game at the 10:29 mark when forward Janice Yang scored off a feed from forward Maddie Woo. But less than a minute later the Bulldogs started a stretch that would quickly make that goal a distant memory.
First, Marchin blasted a slap shot through traffic that gave Yale the lead again, 2-1, at 11:05. Junior forwards Janelle Ferrara and Jamie Haddad assisted.
The Bulldogs' offense had been held to two goals Friday night in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Bears, but on Saturday Yale cruised past that plateau with ease. Two minutes and 32 seconds after Marchin's goal, a power play goal by sophomore forward Krista Yip-Chuck extended the lead to 3-1. Yip-Chuck followed up after her initial shot was blocked, and Ferrara and Haddad got the puck back to her.
Just 14 seconds after Yip-Chuck's goal, senior forward Stephanie Mock scored (assisted by freshman forward Courtney Pensavalle and sophomore forward Gretchen Tarrant) to make the score 4-1. The goal was all the more impressive considering that it was Mock's first game back after missing the last two with an injury.
The remarkable stretch continued for Yale when Staenz scored (assisted by Yip-Chuck and senior defenseman Madi Murray) 12 seconds after Mock's goal to make the score 5-1. That made it three goals in 26 seconds for the Bulldogs, and ended the day early for Bears goalie Monica Elvin -- who had stonewalled Yale with 47 saves less than 24 hours earlier. Julianne Landry came on in relief.
The Bears crept closer with a power play goal by forward Sarah Robson at 7:56 of the second, but other than that sophomore goalie Hanna Mandl kept Brown at bay.
Brown scored another power play goal 2:37 into the third, pulling within 5-3 on a goal by forward Kaitlyn Keon. That prompted the Bulldogs to send senior Jaimie Leonoff in to relieve Mandl (six saves) in goal. They provided her with an insurance goal at 4:20, as Marchin blasted in another one -- this time assisted by Staenz and freshman forward Eden Murray on a power play. That made the final 6-3.
Leonoff finished with three saves, while Landy made 25 and Elvin made three.
In addition to dominating in shots (34-12), Yale also won 41 of 59 face-offs -- with Raines winning 17 of the 20 she took. This was the third time this season Yale scored six or more goals in a game, a feat they last achieved in a 13-0 win vs. Sacred Heart Nov. 21.
Yale travels to the North Country next weekend and will face No. 7 Clarkson Friday night.
