McGill Scores Three in Third to Beat Yale 4-1 in Exhibition

Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale women's ice hockey team concluded the preseason portion of its schedule Sunday, falling to McGill 4-1 in an exhibition at Ingalls Rink. The Martlets broke open a 1-1 game with three third-period goals.

McGill had played two of Yale's ECAC Hockey rivals earlier in the weekend, falling 2-1 at Dartmouth Friday and 3-2 at Harvard Saturday. Yale, coming off a 6-1 win vs. the Toronto Aeros in a scrimmage Saturday, took a 1-0 lead when junior forward Phoebe Staenz backhanded in a pass from sophomore forward Emily Monaghan at 8:37 of the first. Senior forward Hanna Åström also assisted on the play.

Junior goalie Hanna Mandl came up with a big glove save with five minutes left in the first after a turnover at the Yale blue line gave McGill one of its best scoring chances. But two minutes later, after Mandl had denied forward Gabrielle Davidson on the initial attempt at a wraparound, Davidson followed up her own shot with a goal that tied the score 1-1.

Senior forward Janelle Ferrara, Yale's captain, nearly gave the Bulldogs the lead just before the first intermission. But after picking off a pass in McGill's zone, Ferrara sent a shot off the crossbar and the score remained tied.

The second period was scoreless thanks in part to some good work by the Yale penalty killing unit, which killed off a 5-on-3 for the Martlets early in the period. The Bulldogs had a number of good scoring chances themselves, including a shot by senior forward Jamie Haddad that hit the pipe late in the period. The teams remained tied 1-1 heading into the third.

McGill went ahead 2-1 at 7:10 of the third on a power play, as forward Melodie Daoust -- a gold medal winner for Team Canada at the 2014 Olympics -- knocked in her own rebound. Davidson and defenseman Brittney Fouracres assisted on the play.

Yale got a power play with 11:23 left in the game, but was unable to come up with the equalizer. Four minutes after the Bulldogs' power play ended, the Martlets got a 2-on-1 and turned it into a goal by forward Stefanie Pohlod -- assisted by Davidson -- that made the score 3-1 with 5:20 to play.

The Bulldogs got another power play with 3:53 left, but Martlets goalie Kayla Lonberg denied multiple good chances to keep Yale from getting any closer. Yale pulled Mandl with 1:29 to play, and Davidson then stole the puck at center ice and sent it into the empty net with 40 seconds left for the 4-1 final.

Lonberg finished with 28 saves, while Mandl finished with 16.

Yale starts the regular season next Saturday at No. 7 Quinnipiac.
