Box Score Two Goals for Doherty
WASHINGTON, D.C. - A 6-1 halftime deficit proved to be too much for the Yale women's lacrosse team to overcome in its season opener on a frigid, snowy and windy day at George Washington Saturday. The Bulldogs, hurt by 20 turnovers, fell to the Colonials 13-5. Sophomore midfielder Sophie Mussafer scored her first career goal for Yale.
After a goal by senior attacker Erin Magnuson tied the game 1-1 at the 25:37 mark of the first, GW went on a 5-0 run to close out the half. Attacker Rachel Mia scored two of her game-high four goals for the game during that span.
Sophomore Tess McEvoy scored in the first minute of the second half to get Yale within four goals, but GW (1-1, 0-0 A-10) answered with another 5-0 run to put the game out of reach. In addition to Mussafer, Yale also got tallies from senior midfielder Christina Doherty and junior midfielder Kelly Anne Sherlock.
Yale (0-1, 0-0 Ivy League) senior goalkeeper Erin Mullins stopped five of 11 shots in the first half, while freshman goalie Sydney Marks made three saves on 10 shots in the second half. Doherty led all players with seven ground balls.
The Bulldogs return to New Haven for the home opener vs. Quinnipiac Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
