Yale Earns Multiple Top Finishes in Dual Meet with Springfield College

NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The Yale women's gymnastics team was back in action Saturday competing against Springfield College in a dual meet. This was the Bulldogs second appearance at home this season as well as the last for seniors Brianna Chrisman, Joyce Li, Katherine Lucas, and captain Morgan Traina.

 

Yale once again came away with a strong team score. The Bulldogs edged out Springfield College with a result of 188.650- 184.250. Two gymnasts competed in the all-around competition for the Bulldogs. Traina placed second with a total of 37.550. Li was not too far behind with a score of 36.300, landing her in fourth place.

 

Vault was the best apparatus of the day for Yale, with a total team score of 47.525. Junior Camilla Opperman led the way with a mark of 9.700, which tied her career-best and landed her in first place. Traina finished second on the event (9.600). Li was the leadoff performer for the Bulldogs, scoring a 9.450. Fellow seniors Lucas and Chrisman competed on vault as well, scoring 9.425 and 9.350, respectively. Anna Merkuryev rounded out the rotation, scoring a 8.700.

 

The Bulldogs then moved on to the uneven bars, where once again a Yale gymnast came out on top. Li sat atop the leaderboard with a score of 9.675. Tatiana Winkelman (9.625) and Allison Bushman (9.600) joined Li on the podium, finishing second and third, respectively. Anella Anderson made her first appearance of the meet, scoring 8.825. Merkuryev also competed on the uneven bars (8.025) and Traina was the last performer for the Bulldogs, scoring 9.275.

 

The Bulldogs then moved on to the balance beam, where their success continued. Traina and Brittney Sooksengdao tied for the win on the event with scores of 9.775. Merkuryev rounded out yet another sweep of the top three with a third place finish (9.625). Anderson found herself in fifth with a score of 9.425. Winkelman and Li finished off the rotation for Yale, scoring 8.250 and 8.300.

 

On floor exercise, Opperman received a second individual event win with a score of 9.775. The next Bulldog on the leaderboard was Anderson, finishing fourth with a score of 9.575. Lucas was not far behind with a score of 9.500. Sooksengdao, Traina and Li also competed on floor with marks of 9.475, 8.900 and 8.875.

 

The Bulldogs look to build on their successes as they travel to the Navy Pier Quad Meet on Feb.13.
