Yale Drops Only Two Matches in Victory over UMass
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale women's tennis team defeated UMass 5-2 on Friday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. All three of Yale's doubles pairs won their matches, and the Bulldogs dropped only two of their eight singles matches.
Playing at No. 1 doubles, senior Madeleine Hamilton and junior Tina Jiang defeated Ana Yrazusta and Carol Benito 7-5, while senior captain Ree Ree Li and sophomore Valerie Shklover defeated Anna Woosley and Ruth Crawford 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. These victories mark both teams' second consecutive wins. Meanwhile, the pair of juniors Sherry Li and Caroline Lynch notched their third straight doubles win after overcoming Arielle Griffin and Lauren Moreno 7-5.
Jiang and Yrazusta competed again, this time at No. 1 singles in a nail-bitingly close match. The two players were level for much of the match, as Jiang took the first set in the tiebreak and Yrazusta broke once in the second set, forcing the match into a super tiebreak. In the end, Jiang showed resilience in overcoming Yrazusta 10-8 for a final score of 7-6, 4-6, 1-0(8).
Sherry Li and Shklover also returned to the courts for their singles matches, as Li triumphed over Aarzoo Malik 6-2, 6-3 and Shklover beat Moreno 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Amy Yang eased past Benito 6-1, 6-3 to seal the win for Yale. Although sophomore Elizabeth Zordani and freshman Sonal Shrivastava played matches that did not apply toward the final result, both were victorious. Zordani defeated Griffin 6-3, 6-3, and Shrivastava defeated Brittany Collens 7-6, 6-2.

The Bulldogs will have Saturday to rest before returning to the courts on Sunday for a doubleheader. Yale will take on Fairfield at 10:00 a.m. and LIU at 2:00 p.m.
