Bulldogs Fall 4-0 to Tigers in Fifth-Place Match
HANOVER, N.H. - The Yale women's tennis team was defeated by Princeton in the fifth-place match of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship on Sunday. Princeton managed four singles wins to secure a 4-0 victory. Doubles matches were not contested.
Many of Yale's players competed in close match-ups. Junior Sherry Li was pushed to three sets, as she won her first set 6-2 before her opponent took the second 6-3 and went on to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Senior captain Ree Ree Li and sophomore Elizabeth Zordani also played three set matches, but both were left unfinished. Li and her opponent each claimed a set 6-3 with the match ending in the third set at 3-2 in Li's favor. Zordani narrowly lost the first set 7-6(3) in the tiebreak but managed to come back in the second, winning it 6-2 to push the match to the third set.
Senior Madeleine Hamilton and sophomore Valerie Shklover also played sets that were determined by tiebreaks. While Hamilton was defeated in the first set 6-4, she narrowly lost the second in the tiebreak to give the win to Princeton 6-4, 7-6(6). Shklover showed grit in the first set tiebreaker but could not overcome her opponent, as the match ended 7-6(7), 6-2 in Princeton's favor.
