Hamilton, Jiang, Li and Lynch Shine Again at Doubles Despite Team's Loss
MIAMI, Fla. - On Thursday, the Yale women's tennis team was narrowly defeated 4-3 by No. 57 Florida International University. Yale faced a tough challenge given FIU's record of 11-2 going into the match. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs came out with a number of positive points, especially the fine performances at doubles.
Competing at No. 1 doubles, senior Madeleine Hamilton and junior Tina Jiang defeated Maryna Veksler and Nina Nagode 6-4 to extend their winning streak to seven matches. Juniors Sherry Li and Caroline Lynch secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Nerma Caluk and Kaitlin Brozovich. That victory marks the pair's eighth consecutive win.
Hamilton was a two-time winner on Thursday. Rebounding from her loss in Tuesday's match against University of South Florida, Hamilton defeated Maryna Veksler in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Meanwhile, Jiang played a hard-fought match against Nina Nagode. Although Jiang lost the first set 6-1, she charged back to win the second 6-4. In the end, Nagode managed to win the third set 6-2 for a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Jiang. Playing at No. 6 singles, freshman Amy Yang added a third point in Yale's favor. While Yang and Kaitlin Brozovich were level throughout most of the first set, Yang pulled through to win the set in the tiebreak 8-6. After the first set, Yang cruised through the second, dropping only two games for a final score of 7-6(6), 6-2.
