Sherry Li Picks up Two Wins; Bulldogs Shine Again at Doubles

ITHACA, N.Y. - On Sunday, the Yale women's tennis team was defeated by No. 71 Cornell 5-2. Although the Bulldogs took the doubles point and junior Sherry Li won her singles match, the Big Red earned five singles points to secure the victory.

Li teamed up with sophomore Valerie Shklover to win the first match of the day, defeating Mariko Iinuma and Madison Stevens 6-3 in the No. 3 spot. The No. 2 doubles match saw Cornell level the score to 1-1, leaving senior Madeleine Hamilton and junior Tina Jiang's match against Marika Cusick and Alexandra D'Ascenzo to decide the winner of the doubles point. Hamilton and Jiang were neck-and-neck with Cusick and D'Ascenzo throughout most of the match, but Yale's No. 1 pair pulled through the tiebreak to win the match 7-6(5).

Despite Yale's strong start, Cornell surged back to win a series of singles matches. Li, however, added a point in Yale's favor with her victory at No. 3 singles. After Li comfortably took the first set 6-2, Iinuma came back to win the second 6-4. Nonetheless, Li was unfazed and dropped only one game in the last set, winning the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

Yale will return home to compete against rival No. 63 Harvard on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
