GREENWICH, Conn. -- Led by a first-place finish from sophomore Jennifer Peng, the Yale women's golf team finished third at the Ivy League Championship this weekend at The Stanwich Club (6,094 yards, par 73). The Bulldogs concluded play on Sunday with a 318 in the final round to finish at +72 (948). Peng was the individual medalist by one stroke over Harvard's Anne Cheng.
Peng began Sunday in first place, but after both golfers birdies the fifth and seventh holes a double-bogey by Peng on eight allowed Cheng to move into a tie. The two were tied again after 16 holes, as Cheng had double-bogeyed 15 and Peng had done the same on 16. The 17th hole proved decisive, as Peng's birdie there gave her the lead and she maintained it with a par on 18. She finished the day with a +6 (79), and her three-round score of +6 (225) was one better than Cheng.
Peng is Yale's first individual medalist at the Ivy League Championship since 2010 (Alyssa Roland '11). She is the fifth Bulldog to earn that award in the 20 years of the tournament's history.
Peng was not the only Bulldog to finish near the top of the leaderboard, though. Freshman Julie Luo shot a 79 on Sunday and finished tied for 10th individually at 239. Luo had a very consistent tournament, with 79s in rounds one and three and an 81 in the second round.
Yale's best round of the day Sunday came from junior Sandy Wongwaiwate, whose 78 marked a five-stroke improvement over the previous day. She finished tied for third on the team, and tied for 17th overall, with classmate Elisabeth Bernabe at 243. Senior Deanna Song, Yale's captain, rounded out Yale's lineup with a 249.
Yale has now finished in the top three at the Ivy Championship 18 times in 20 years. Harvard finished at 919 to win the tournament, 13 strokes better than second-place Princeton.
