No. 11 Princeton Overcomes 19 Saves by Marks

Box Score

PRINCETON, N.J. -- An early 6-0 run by Princeton ultimately proved too much for the Yale women's lacrosse team to overcome on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon at Sherrerd Field. The Bulldogs regrouped and got within 9-4 early in the second half before the Tigers went on a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach en route to a 16-5 win. Yale sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Marks finished with a career-high 19 saves.

After Princeton (8-2, 3-0 Ivy League) took a 4-0 lead in just over 13 minutes, Yale (5-7, 2-2 Ivy League) called timeout. The Bulldogs were eventually able to slow the Tigers' momentum, and after a pair of goals by junior attacker Tess McEvoy the score was 8-2 Princeton heading into halftime.

The Tigers scored the first goal of the second half, but Yale then reeled off a pair of goals. The first came from sophomore midfielder Lily Smith on a free position, and the second -- from sophomore midfielder Emily Granger on a rebound -- came shortly after Marks denied a Princeton free position shot.

Those big plays for the Bulldogs prompted a Princeton timeout at 24:45 of the second, and that wound up being just what the Tigers needed. They reeled off five straight goals to take a commanding 14-4 lead with 13:20 to play, when Yale called timeout.

Coming back from such a large deficit was not in the cards for Yale against Princeton goalie Ellie DeGarmo, who entered the day second in the nation in save percentage. DeGarmo denied a Yale free position shot with just over 12 minutes to play, and with less than eight minutes to go the Tigers scored again to go ahead 15-4.

Sophomore midfielder Taryn Gallagher ended the Princeton run by scoring with four and a half minutes to play. The Tigers then scored with a second left to make the final 16-5.

This was the fourth straight game in which Princeton has allowed seven or fewer goals. DeGarmo finished with nine saves.

Draw controls were a bright spot for the Bulldogs, as they won that category 13-9 and had nine different players contribute draws.

Yale travels to Dartmouth next Saturday.
