Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two seniors on the Yale women's ice hockey team were honored Friday as the Ivy League announced its postseason awards: forward Phoebe Staenz (Zürich, Switzerland) was named first team All-Ivy League and defenseman Taylor Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) was named second team All-Ivy League. The duo played key roles in helping Yale to a tie for second place in the Ivy League standings, its best finish since the 2005-06 season. Staenz is the first Bulldog to be named first team All-Ivy League since goaltender Jackee Snikeris '11 in 2011.
This is the second All-Ivy honor for Staenz, who was an honorable mention selection as a freshman. It is the first All-Ivy honor for Marchin.
Staenz leads Yale in goals and is third in points (14-9-23) this season. That included four goals and four assists for eight points in the nine Ivy League games she played. Staenz leads all active Bulldogs in career points with 90, and is 12th in the nation in goals per game (14 in 23 games, 0.61 goals per game). She is tied for second on the team with a +12 and has incurred only three penalties.
In addition to her stellar play for Yale, Staenz helped her native Switzerland qualify for the 2018 Olympics Feb. 12 as the Swiss beat the Czech Republic 4-1 in their last game at the Final Olympic Qualification tournament. With the win, the Swiss claimed a spot at the 2018 Olympics, where they will seek to earn another medal after coming away with bronze in 2014.
Staenz has extensive international playing experience, including scoring the game-tying goal in Switzerland's come-from-behind 4-3 win over Sweden for the bronze medal at the 2014 Olympics.
Prior to coming to Yale Staenz was Boston Globe All-Scholastic and the Division 1 Player of the Year in girls' prep school hockey at Choate Rosemary Hall. She also played hockey for Assabet Valley, winning a national championship.
Marchin is 11th in the nation in points per game among defensemen (7-12-19 in 29 games, 0.66 points per game). She had points in six straight games to start the season. Her six assists in Ivy League games, and six points as a defenseman, tied for third-best in the league. She has more than tripled her point total from last year (1-5-6). Marchin and Staenz are tied for the team lead in power play goals with four.
Marchin has not missed a game in her career (121 straight). Prior to Yale she attended Regina (Mich.) high school before doing a post-graduate year at Choate Rosemary Hall. Like Staenz, she played for Assabet Valley, winning a national championship.
The two seniors have seen the Yale program make dramatic progress over the last four years. The team was 9-16-7 their freshman year, but has surpassed that win total this season. The Bulldogs have qualified for the ECAC Hockey playoffs three times in the last four years after going five years without a playoff appearance prior to that. Overall the seniors have led the team to 44 wins so far.
