Dartmouth Downs Yale in Hanover

Big Green defense and Bulldog miscues lead to 42-10 defeat

Box Score HANOVER, N.H. – In a battle between two of the five unbeaten teams remaining in the FCS this season, it was Dartmouth that came away with the win as the Big Green downed Yale, 42-10. Dartmouth entered the game leading the nation allowing just 8.0 points per game and continued its defensive approach which led to an early lead that the Bulldogs could not overcome.

The Big Green scored on the first drive of the game and followed it with two first quarter interceptions which led to touchdowns and a 21-0 first quarter advantage that Yale tried to play out of all game.

The Elis got on the board four minutes into the second quarter with a field goal by senior Sam Tuckerman while the two teams combined to go scoreless for the next 10 minutes of play. Dartmouth was able to notch its fourth touchdown with less than a minute for a 28-3 lead at the break. The Big Green got two more TD's in the third.

"Give credit to Dartmouth; they played one heck of a football game," said head coach Tony Reno. "They are a great team and they showed it in every area today. We did not play to our standard. I just said to the guys that the most important thing you can do is how you respond to adversity. The biggest thing for us is to learn from today and respond to it."

The Yale offense racked up 27 first downs and owned a 17-minute edge in time of possession but the Dartmouth defense only allowed the Bulldogs to enter the red zone three times thanks to nine pass breakups.

The Elis had 150 rushing yards as six different players went for at least 10 yards but Dartmouth went big through the air with 443 passing yards including 203 and two touchdowns to Drew Estrada.

Junior Melvin Rouse II started the game a cornerback and then moved to other side of the ball to play wide receiver and led the Bulldogs with 65 yards on a game-high six catches.

First year quarterback Nolan Grooms got his first snaps at quarterback in the fourth quarter and went 4-for-4 for 39 yards and a touchdown pass to Darrion Carrington.

Yale now has a week to get ready for Richmond on the road on Saturday, October 19, before resuming Ivy League play on October 26 against Penn at the Yale Bowl.
