Yale Captures 13th at Pre-Nationals

Kayley DeLay was Yale's top scorer at Pre-Nats, claiming an impressive 13th place finish overall.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Facing some of the nation's top competition, the Yale women's cross country team finished 13th in a 37-team field at the Under Armour Pre-National Invitational Saturday. The day was highlighted by Kayley DeLay's incredible 13th place finish individually but included a number of solid finishes and personal bests for the Bulldogs.

Despite Terre Haute's typically chilly conditions this time of year, Saturday's race combined near-perfect weather with a relatively flat course, giving the Bulldogs a chance to roll. DeLay, who finished first for Yale in a time of 20:31 for six kilometers, passed 72 people from the 2K to 4K marks. Setting a new personal record, DeLay improved upon her previous best by 15 seconds and finished near the top of an incredibly talented field of individuals.

Middle-distance star Jocelyn Chau crossed the finish line next for the Bulldogs. She finished in 56th place, clocking a time of 20:59. Only two seconds off of her time at the Panorama Farms Invitational, Chau displayed impressive consistency in Saturday's race. Finishing just 12 seconds behind Chau, Jane Miller recorded a personal best of 21:11 to finish third for Yale and 76th overall.

Sevanne Ghazarian and Gemma Shepherd rounded out the Bulldogs' top five scoring runners, finishing 115th and 157th in a field of over 250 runners. Both runners bettered their 6K times from Panorama Farms, with Ghazarian posting a time of 21:35 while Shepherd snuck under 22 minutes for the first time this season clocking a 21:58.

Hannah Schupansky and Zoe Nuechterlein claimed sixth and seventh place finishes for Yale, crossing the line just a second apart and both under the 23 minute mark. The Washington Huskies claimed the team title in Terre Haute, with No. 2 BYU finishing in a close second and No. 3 Colorado coming in third. While falling narrowly to Boston College, the Bulldogs finished just in front of both Duke and Vanderbilt in addition to beating Cornell, the only other Ivy League team in the race.
