MIAMI, Fla. - The Yale women's tennis team came out on the losing end of a tight match against FIU, losing 4-3 in their first match of the weekend.
FIU jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. The teams exchanged 6-0 wins, with the Bulldogs winning the No. 2 matchup and the Panthers winning the No. 3 spot. Jessie Gong and Samantha Martinelli fought hard in the No. 1 match, but came up short 6-3.
Martinelli quickly rebounded to knot the score at 1-1. From there, the two teams fought blow for blow. FIU won the No. 3 and 4 spots by identical 6-4, 6-3 scores, while the Bulldogs mirrored that with wins by Kathy Wang and Amy Yang in the No. 5 and 6 matches, respectively. With the score at 3-3, FIU's Kamila Umarova pulled out a deciding third set against Caroline Dunleavy to give the Panthers the victory.
The Bulldogs continue their swing in the Sunshine State tomorrow against UCF. Play begins at 11:00 am.
