NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Fresh off a very strong performance in a 3-0 victory over UConn on Wednesday, the Yale men's soccer team makes the long trip to Western New York to meet Niagara on Sunday. Kickoff at Niagara Field is slated for 1 p.m., and the Niagara Sports Network has the video.
Here are notes on the matchup:
* Ryan Matteo scored twice and
Miguel Yuste added a goal on a penalty kick in the 3-0 win over UConn, Yale's first over the Huskies since 2003.
* The Bulldogs (1-0-2) are unbeaten after three games for the first time since the 2005 team started 3-0-3.
* All three of Yale's opponents played in the NCAA Tournament a year ago
* Yuste leads the Bulldogs in scoring with five points (2 goals, 1 assist).
* Elian Haddock has played all 310 minutes and goal, posting a 0.87 goals against average. The shutout vs. UConn was the first of his career.
* Yale has outscored its opponents 4-2 in the first half.
HISTORY LESSONS
The Bulldogs had a 19-3 edge in shots in a 1-0 win over Niagara last fall, the only meeting between the teams. The game was played at Quinnipiac's Soccer Stadium because the turf at Reese Stadium was being replaced. Matteo assisted on the only goal, which was scored by
Kyle Kenagy '19.
SCOUTING NIAGARA
The Purple Eagles (1-3) host Hartford on Friday night. Niagara won its only home game thus far, 2-1 over Northern Kentucky on Rodrigo Almeida's overtime goal. Almeida has scored two of Niagara's three goals on the season. The Purple Eagles will be playing their third game this week. They dropped a 2-1 decision at Duquesne on Tuesday night.
