Pair of Games at Johnson Field to Open Season

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team opens the 2019 season this weekend, hosting a pair of games at Johnson Field. The Bulldogs play UMass at 6:00 p.m. on Friday (ESPN+) and Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (ESPN+).

A SEASON OF PROGRESS
The Bulldogs have improved their win total compared to the previous season in each of the past two years, and last year's total was the team's best since winning 11 in the 2011 Ivy League championship season. Eight players who started 12 or more games last year return, including the starting goalie and four of the top six goal-scorers.

FIVE ALL-IVY HONOREES RETURN
Yale returns five student-athletes who earned All-Ivy League honors last year, more than all but one team in the Ancient Eight:
  • Senior midfielder Bridget Condie (St. Louis, Mo.) has earned All-Ivy honors twice. She was a second-team selection in her first year and a first-team selection last season. She led the team in points (6-5-17) and assists and tied for the team lead in goals.
  • Junior forward/midfielder Imogen Davies (Kilmacolm, Scotland) is also a two-time All-Ivy honoree, having earned second-team recognition in 2017 and honorable mention in 2018. Yale's inserter on penalty corners, she tied for first on the team in goals (six), finished second on the team in points (15) and tied for second in assists (three). She helped Scotland's U21 team win the EuroHockey Junior Championship II in Alanya, Turkey in July.
  • Sophomore midfielder Théodora Dillman (Lancaster, Pa.) was a second-team pick. She tied for the team lead with six goals, the most of any Ivy rookie.
  • Senior back Holly Jackson (Glastonbury, England) was also a second-team pick. One of Yale's defensive stalwarts for the past three years, she was the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal in the Bulldogs' 3-2 win at Brown in the season finale. Thanks to her help, Yale limited its opponent to two goals or fewer in eight of the last nine games.
  • Junior goalie Sydney Terroso (York, Pa.) was a first team All-Ivy pick in 2017 and a second-team pick last year. She posted a .748 save percentage and a 2.12 goals against average while winning 10 games. She allowed one goal or less five times in her final eight appearances.
INTERNATIONAL BULLDOGS
There are five different countries represented on Yale's roster. In addition to the 17 student-athletes from the United States, the Bulldogs have five internationals: HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Yale is 12-6 at Johnson Field in the last two years.

THE YALE STAFF
Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey, is in her 15th season at Yale's helm. Her staff returns intact from last season and includes assistants Jess Barnett, Kristen O'Rourke and Mary Beth Barham '13. Chaney Kalinich '19 will serve as manager, having graduated this past spring after spending four seasons as a goalkeeper for the Bulldogs.

SCOUTING UMASS
UMass (0-2, 0-0 Atlantic 10) opened its season with a pair of losses on the road to ranked teams last weekend, falling 7-0 at No. 14 Ohio State and 1-0 at No. 12 Louisville. The Minutewomen and the Bulldogs last played in 2017, when junior forward/midfielder Olivia Levieux (Johannesburg, South Africa) scored the game's only goal and junior goalkeeper Sydney Terroso (York, Pa.) made nine saves for a 1-0 shutout win. The Minutewomen were ranked No. 23 in the country at the time.

SCOUTING SACRED HEART
Sacred Heart (0-2, 0-0 NEC), which plays its home games at Johnson Field, lost a pair of road games last weekend to start the season -- 3-0 at La Salle and 3-2 at Villanova. The Pioneers were picked for fourth in the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll. They will play Saint Francis at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Johnson Field before returning to New Haven for Sunday's game.
