NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With all of the team's top 10 point scorers from 2018 returning, the Yale field hockey team figures to have the depth necessary for success in 2019. That depth was on full display Sunday afternoon at Johnson Field, as four different players scored goals en route to a 4-0 win over Sacred Heart in the second game of the season.
"We have a lot of depth at forward and midfield when it comes to scoring goals," said
Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey. "We don't think we will have to rely on just one person."
Yale (1-1, 0-0 Ivy League) bookended Sunday's game with two goals in the first quarter (from sophomore midfielder
Théodora Dillman and senior back
Holly Jackson) and two more in the fourth quarter (from senior forward
Camille Scheyer and junior forward
Imogen Davies). That overcame an otherwise sterling effort from Sacred Heart goalie Hailey Power, who made 25 saves.
"After the game the first thing I did was walk up and shake their goalkeeper's hand," said Stuper. "She made some great saves."
Yale claimed a 48-14 advantage in shots. Junior goalkeeper
Sydney Terroso handled most of them, finishing with eight saves. That included a nice stop to preserve the shutout during a penalty corner with less than two minutes to play. She also got plenty of help all game from Dillman, including a pair of defensive saves in the first quarter.
"
Holly Jackson was phenomenal out of the backfield," said Stuper. "She made solid tackles and handled the ball really well under a ton of pressure."
Sacred Heart falls to 1-3, 0-0 NEC.
Yale now travels to Virginia, where the Bulldogs will take on No. 20 Liberty and No. 11 Virginia next weekend.
