Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It's not easy getting things clicking for a matinee game following a huge victory the night before. However, the Yale Women's Hockey Team knocked off No. 5 Clarkson Friday and then followed up with a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence today at Ingalls Rink.
Grace Lee's ninth goal of the year at 12:44 of the third period was the difference in the Bulldogs' four-point weekend, Yale's first-ever sweep of the North Country teams. The Elis have momentum heading into the ECAC's stretch run.
The rookie forward found the puck in the slot after a shot from Saroya Tinker hit a defender. Lee jumped on the rebound and fired it past the Saints goalie. Yale, which dominated in shots, 30-19, during a penalty-free contest, put the game away from there with puck possession and great defense.
The Bulldogs got on the board first when captain Laura Anderson worked a bouncing puck out from behind the net to the low slot. First-year Elle Hartje cruised in from the left circle and smacked it on the ice through traffic and into the back of the cage at 6:22 for her eighth of the season.
Junior goalie Gianna Meloni helped the Elis end SLU's unbeaten streak at five games by stopping 18 of 19 shots, including a breakaway in the second period and some other close chances late in the contest.
"We challenged them to be better today [than last night], and a lot of kids were better in different ways," said Mark Bolding, Yale's Susan Cavanagh Head Coach, whose squad is now 9-8 overall and 6-4 in conference. "We weathered a few storms with their [SLU] transition game. It was a great, consistent effort."
