Bulldogs Win Three Bouts at Penn State Invitational

Victories Come Over Haverford, UNC & Temple

The Yale women's fencing team won against three of its six competitors at the Penn State Invitational.

In the first round, the Bulldogs lost to Penn State 17-10, though the epee squad managed a 5-4 victory. In the second round, the Bulldogs rebounded with a resounding 25-2 victory over Haverford. The epee squad went undefeated and the saber and foil squads both finished 8-1. First-years Sydney Hirsch and Sophia Zhuang in saber had impressive +12 and +11 indicators respectively. In foil, substitutions allowed walk-ons Julia Balch and Grace Baghdadi bouts, which they both won 5-1. In round three, the Bulldogs defeated UNC 19-8. The saber squad won 7-2, and both foil and epee squads won 6-3. Zhuang and first-year foilist Emme Zhou won all three of their bouts, as did sophomore epeeist Shirley Wang.

After the lunch break, the Bulldogs lost to Penn 15-12, with all three squads losing with heartbreaking 5-4 scores. Against Temple, which only fields a women's team, the Bulldogs won 14-13. The foil squad won 6-3, with Zhou earning a strong +11 indicator and again going undefeated. The epee squad earned a close 5-4 victory, with starters Wang, first-year Linda Liu, and sophomore Joy Ma going undefeated in their opening bouts. In the sixth round, the Bulldogs lost with a tight 14-13 score, though the epee squad enjoyed a 7-2 victory with both Wang and Michelle Nam winning all of their bouts.

After a long day of competition, the Bulldogs enjoyed several successes on the individual, squad and team level.

Next up is the Philadelphia Invitational next weekend.
