Â
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale spent a large majority of the non-conference season criss-crossing the country. Since the start of Ivy play, though, the Bulldogs have mostly been entrenched in the friendly confines of the John J. Lee Amphitheater. That changes over the next two weekends as Yale has four straight games on the road. It starts Friday with a Valentine's Day date at Princeton followed by a Saturday contest at Penn. The Bulldogs and Tigers tipoff at 7 p.m. on Friday in a game that will be televised on ESPNews. Saturday is a 6 p.m. tip at The Palestra. ESPN+ has the video of the Yale-Penn game.
Â
The Bulldogs, who have played five of their six Ivy games at Lee, thrived during their early season travels. They were 8-4 in non-conference play away from home, and six of those wins came in true road games, which was among the most of any school in the nation. The success continued in the first Ivy League road game, a 73-62 victory at Brown on Jan. 24.
Â
Friday's game is a battle for first place. Both Yale and Princeton sit at 5-1 in Ivy play. The Bulldogs (17-5 overall) are coming off a split of the Harvard-Dartmouth home weekend, dropping a 78-77 decision to the Crimson before rebounding for a dominating 75-57 victory over the Big Green.
Â
Yale, which received a vote in the national coaches' poll for the fifth straight week on Monday, sits at No. 50 in the KenPom rankings and No. 59 in the NCAA Net Rating. In addition, the Bulldogs are ranked No. 4 in the CollegeInsider Mid Major Top 25 and No. 11 in Mid Major Madness Top 25.
Â
A pair of Bulldogs are approaching milestones.
Azar Swain, who leads the Ivy League with 68 three-pointers, needs five more to set the single-season school record, topping the mark of 72, set by Ed Petersen in 1991-92.
Paul Atkinson, junior, sits at 949 career points and needs 51 to reach 1,000.
Â
Both are coming off big weekends. Swain scored a career-high 33 points, including 27 in the second half, vs. Harvard and followed that up with a 21-point effort against Dartmouth. The 27-point half was six shy of Tony Lavelli's school record set in 1949, and the 33 overall points were eight shy of John Lee's school record for points in an Ivy game. Swain is 12th in the nation in three-point field goals per game (3.24).
Â
Atkinson, who is eighth in the nation in field goal percentage (.643), scored a career-high 28 points vs. the Crimson and had 17 points and eight rebounds in the victory over Dartmouth.
Â
Yale continues to lead the Ivy League in several statistical categories, including scoring offense (77.0 ppg.), scoring defense (63.5 ppg.), field goal percentage (.474), field goal percentage defense (.379), three-point field goal percentage (.379), three-point field goal percentage defense (.295), rebounding margin (+6.0) and assists (16.8 per game).
Â
Nationally, the Bulldogs are second in defensive rebounds per game (30.55), ninth in assists per game (16.8) and scoring margin (+13.5), 13th in field goal percentage defense (.379) and 19th in three-point field goal percentage (.379).
