SAN JOSE, Calif. – Yale's trip to Northern California ended in dramatic fashion.
Gretchen Bunovsky's sacrifice fly plated
Katie Tews with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Bulldogs edged California Baptist 3-2 in their final game at the Silicon Valley Classic at San Jose State.
Yale went 2-3 in five games at the Classic.
Annie Tarte, Sam Goodcase and
Olivia Vinyard all had two hits for the Bulldogs.
Miranda Papes pitched 5.2 innings of relief, allowing only one earned run, to earn the victory. Starter
Mary Baumann tossed the first 3.1 innings, also allowing just one earned run.
The winning rally started when Tews was placed on second base to start the inning.
Giovy Webb moved Tews to third with a sacrifice bunt and Bunovsky followed with a fly ball to centerfield that was deep enough to score Tews and allow the Bulldogs to walk off with the victory.
Yale had taken an early 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Goodcase and Vinyard.
California Baptist, though, scored once the fourth and once in the sixth to tie the score.
The Bulldogs play at Liberty's Tournament next weekend. First up is Hofstra and Fairfield on Friday.
