Gaudet’s Five Goals Not Enough For Yale

Bulldogs’ Comeback Falls Short in 13-10 Loss at UMass

AMHERST, Mass.  -  Yale erased a five-goal deficit in the third quarter last year before earning an overtime win, but the Bulldogs, fueled by a five-goal day by Matt Gaudet, could not convert a big comeback today before falling 13-10 to UMass at Garber Field.

The Minutemen followed a Thomas Bragg goal and a 1-0 deficit with six straight goals on the way to an 11-2 halftime advantage. The Elis, who got a pair from Bragg and 20 wins from TD Ierlan on the X, came out hungry in the third quarter and closed the gap to three goals twice before running out of time.

Contributing to the rough first half and the comeback falling short were 25 turnovers and five failed clears. Otherwise, the visitors dominated the X and had seven more ground balls than the home team.

Senior Brody Wilson had the start in the Yale net and was replaced by Jack Starr to start the third quarter. Starr (4 saves), the junior who has held the top job the last two seasons but was injured to start the 2020 season, made some quality stops to help his team race back into the contest.

Yale Head Coach Andy Shay expected a tough game today when he spoke to the media on Thursday. "They are one of the toughest teams in the country if not the toughest. We respect them a ton and last year was an absolute war. We were lucky to get away with a win, and we figure it's going to be more of the same."

He was right about that.

The Bulldogs, who entered the week ranked No. 1, are 2-1 with Michigan up next in California next Saturday night.
