Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. - Matt Gaudet is third on Yale's career goal list with 142. Tonight, in the Pacific Coast Shootout, he equaled his career-high with seven tallies on just 10 shots as the No. 5 Bulldogs beat Michigan 17-11 on the campus of Orange Coast College.
The Yale senior attackman had a big night (8 points, game MVP) because classmate TD Ierlan gave his team so many possessions. Ierlan, who entered the game 24 shy of the NCAA career record for face-off wins held by Trevor Baptiste, won 25 of 27 on the X and had 19 ground balls. Ierlan, the most prolific player on the X in the history of the college game, now has 1,159 face-off wins.
Yale scored six of the game's first seven goals, but the Wolverines fought their way back to make it a close game for most of the last three quarters. There was a just a little too much depth of talent on the Yale side as the Elis pulled away in the fourth.
Matt Brandau put the finishing touches on his four-goal, five-point night late in the game, while captain Jackson Morrill had two goals and four assists. Morrill now has points in 55 straight games, the second longest active streak in Division I.
The Bulldogs, who got 10 saves from Jack Starr in the Yale net, open Ivy League play next Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at No. 5/7 Cornell.
