Bulldogs to Compete in Ivy League Round-Robins

Yale Opens Saturday With Four Bouts

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale women's fencing teams will be traveling to Cambridge, Mass., this weekend to compete in the Ivy League Round-Robins hosted by Harvard. The team will face off against Penn, Princeton, Cornell, and Harvard at 10 a.m., noon, 2:45 p.m., and 4:45 p.m. respectively on Saturday. On Sunday, the team faces Brown at 10 a.m. and Columbia at noon.

The Bulldogs, who are receiving votes in the latest CollegeFencing360 national poll, have been rising in the Ivy rankings in recent years, finishing fifth in 2018 and third in 2019. Last year, the Bulldogs defeated Cornell 16-11, Penn 14-13, and Brown 19-8 and lost to Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia.

The Bulldogs will also have the opportunity to earn individual recognition. First-Team All-Ivy is awarded to the top three finishers in each weapon and Second Team All-Ivy is awarded to finishers in the fourth through sixth place. Rankings are determined based on the proportion of wins to losses throughout the entire tournament.

Last year, all three foil starters were recognized. Camille Pham was First-Team All-Ivy, earning third place in the rankings with a 13-3 record. Anna Zhou was Second-Team All Ivy, earning fifth place with an 11-5 record. Sarah Pak was Second-Team All Ivy and has since graduated. Foilist Jenny Zhou did not compete last year but she earned 12th place in 2017.

In epee, Shirley Wang placed seventh, just barely missing Second-Team All Ivy by a fraction of a win-loss percentage. Michelle Nam placed eighth and Joy Ma placed 13th. Lauren Kim, the only returning saberist, placed 15th in 2019 and 14th in 2018. The team also boasts several strong first-year fencers who will be highly competitive contenders for the top spots.

Captain Anna Zhou is enthusiastic, saying, "I'm really excited for theweekend! I know a lot of friends and family are coming to support us and that means a lot to us. My team has been working so hard and I have so much faith in these ladies. We will go into this weekend with a strong mentality and have each other's backs in every situation."
