Yale (4-2, 1-1 Ivy League) was coming off an exhilarating 11-10 win vs. Brown last Saturday in which first-year midfielder
Anna Vetsch scored the game-winner in the final two minutes. This win took a few more minutes and was likewise ended by a rookie, though Markert played a huge role. She scored three goals in the first eight minutes, part of Yale jumping out to a 4-1 lead. Fresno State eventually tied the game 5-5 before a goal by first-year midfielder
Ana Dieroff sent Yale into halftime up 6-5.
The second half was close throughout, with Yale leading most of the way. After Fresno State went ahead 10-9 with 14:14 left -- FSU's first lead of the day -- Yale reeled off three straight goals to go ahead 12-10. Two came from senior attacker
Vanessa Yu and one from sophomore midfielder
Jill Gollob.
Fresno State (2-5, 0-0 MPSF) answered with two goals in a span of 40 seconds late in the second half to tie the game 12-12 with 2:03 to play. Markert got the next draw control, but Carrasquillo hit the crossbar with a shot with just over a minute to play and Yale could not get another shot off before time expired in regulation.
Fresno State got the opening draw of overtime, but sophomore goalie
Clare Boone came up with a big save on a low shot by FSU. The Bulldogs then cleared and sophomore attacker
Olivia Penoyer quickly set up Carrasquillo for the game-winner.
In addition to Markert's six goals, Carrasquillo had three, Yu had two, Dieroff had one and Gollob had one. Yale's goalies, Boone and junior
Amelia Drake, totaled 11 saves. Sophomore midfielder
Payton Vaughn led all players in ground balls with six, while junior defender
Kelsey Dunn added four. Markert led in draw controls with five.
There were Senior Day ceremonies after the game, as this will be Yale's final game of the season following Wednesday's
decision to cancel spring athletics practice and competition. The two members of Yale's Class of 2020, Yu and senior defender
Bronwyn Davies, were recognized for their contributions to the program.
