Pham Elected 2020-21 Captain

Earned First Team All-Ivy Recognition as Sophomore

Camille Pham
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Camille Pham, who finished 12th in the foil at the Ivy League Round Robin this winter, will serve as captain of the Yale women's fencing team for the 2020-2021 season.

In a Zoom call with her teammates after being elected, Pham laid out her goals for the upcoming year, "to create a stronger system of accountability, to help the team become more cohesive and unified, and to push us to produce consistently strong performances throughout the season, especially for Ivies."

Even from a distance, Pham's mission and vision for the team were clear - success on and off the strip.

Pham boasts an inspiring record as a fencer and team leader. She earned first-team All-Ivy honors in the foil as a sophomore, served as team manager for the 2019-2020 season, and was recognized by her teammates two years in a row with the Henry Harutunian Sophomore of the Year Award for the 2018-19 season and the Kristapps Keggi Rookie of the Year Award for the 2017-18 season.

An exemplar of the student-athlete ideal, Pham is an accomplished double major in anthropology and political science. A leader beyond the strip, she interned with the USAID-funded Kawolor project in Dakar, Senegal, in 2019, served as a TSAI City summer fellow in 2018, and contributes to the Pierson residential college community by working a late-night shift in the buttery.

"I'm honored to have been elected to lead this team and to hopefully push us toward a successful season next year," said Pham, who came to Yale from Maplewood, New Jersey. "We have such a strong and committed team, and I'm confident that we will leave our mark on this program and contribute to the legacy of Yale Fencing. I'm so excited to go into next season with my amazing teammates and our new class of Bulldogs."

In the meantime, Pham is coordinating and leading team bonding and off-season workouts over Zoom.
