NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Emme Zhou made an immediate impact for the Yale women's fencing team as a first year. She won a silver medal at the NCAA Northeast Regionals and was set to represent the Bulldogs at the NCAA Championship. Now she has added another honor to her impressive resume. She has been named first team All-America by the United States Fencing Coaches Association.
Three other Bulldogs also were honored. Sophomore
Shirley Wang, who was strong in the epee, finishing sixth at Ivy's and tied for eighth at the Regionals, was selected to the second team, while first year
Sydney Hirsch, who captured the sabre title at the Northeast Regionals, and sophomore
Joy Ma each earned honorable mention recognition. Ma was seventh at the Ivy League Championship in the epee and eighth at the NCAA Regionals.
Hirsch, Wang and Ma were set to join Zhou at the NCAA Championship.
Each year the USFCA recognizes the outstanding work of the fencing student-athletes by naming the All-Americans based on their achievements in the national championship, however, this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic the championships were canceled. All-American honors were based on each fencer's overall body of work through the season competitions and NCAA Regionals.
