NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Charlotte Welch had a goal and an assist and
Gianna Meloni stopped 20 of 21 shots as the Yale Women's Hockey Team knocked off No. 10 Harvard 3-1 before 1,124 at Ingalls Rink in ECAC Hockey play.
The Bulldogs, who beat No. 4 Colgate last Saturday on the road, scored the game's first three goals, including two in the opening frame, while having a 37-21 advantage in shots. This was the first time in the history of the program that Yale beat nationally ranked teams in consecutive games.
"A quick start again helped us, we really put pucks behind them and put pressure on their goalie," said
Mark Bolding, Yale's Susan Cavanagh Head Coach. "It gave us the confidence that we needed and put us in good frame of mind for the second period."
Welch opening the scoring by converting a
Greta Skarzynski pass six minutes into the game. Blueliner
Emma Seitz made it 2-0 late in the first frame when she one-timed a perfect setup from Welch.
"Both goals were great team plays," said Welch. "We always play as a unit and as a team, which resulted in those two goals."
Kaitlyn Rippon gave Yale its biggest lead of the night with a put-back tally in the second.
"We won all the battles that we could tonight and played a solid three periods," said Skarzynski. "Every single shift we took it to them. We did a good job in proving to everyone that we are a contender."
Meloni, who entered the game with three shutouts in as many appearances, did not allow a Crimson tally until 14:42 of the second period.
The Elis, who have won three straight, host Dartmouth on Saturday at 3 p.m.
