NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bulldogs have won three of their last four games heading into the holiday break after a come-from-behind, 4-3 win over Brown at Ingalls Rink.
Four different Yale players hit the net and
Nathan Reid stopped 23 shots to help his team grab important ECAC Hockey points.
The sophomore goalie in his first year of collegiate hockey has been in net for all three of those victories. "We are rolling, this is huge for us," he said. "We have a big chip on our shoulders, but we are keeping a consistent mindset and have a lot of confidence going forward. Every game the belief builds."
Kieran O'Hearn notched his first career goal on a shot from the point to tie the game late in the opening frame, but the Bulldogs were called for a major penalty that carried over to the second and led to a wild sequence of scoring.
The Bears jumped on the five-minute advantage to take a 2-1 lead and still had plenty of power-play time remaining to pad the margin against the Elis. Amazingly, Yale scored twice against the remaining advantage to go ahead 3-2.
First it was
Niklas Allain netting his team-best fourth of the year by skating into the left circle and firing a shot bar down. As time was expiring on the power play, 72 seconds after the Allain tally,
Ryan Stevens split the defense and went in alone on Brown starter Mathieu Caron before flicking a backhander that also grazed the crossbar for his first collegiate goal, moving the visiting head coach to replace his starter in net. That score came exactly five minutes after the power play began, so it does not go down as a shorthander.
The home team had to kill off a second five-minute advantage entering the third period, and that fueled the momentum for a
Graham Lillibridge goal that upped the lead to 4-2.
William Dineen grabbed a loose puck in his own end and spotted the Eli captain sprinting to the opposite blueline. Lillibridge took the perfect feed, with a pair of defenseman on his back, and went top shelf for his third of the year.
"Great vision by him [Dineen], he really snapped it pretty hard," said Lillibridge, who was pumped up about the recent success. "The win gives us a lot of confidence going into break, it was huge to end it on a high note. We are producing a better product on the ice now and guys are gaining confidence and feeling better about our game in general."
Brown pulled its goalie for most of the last three-plus minutes and got one back before Reid closed the door on the chance.
The Elis are now off until the Dec. 28-29 Holiday Faceoff at Milwaukee.
