Winhoffer ’21 Joins Philippines Senior National Team

Set to Play in FIFA World Cup and AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Mark Winhoffer '21 has been named to the Philippines Senior National Team. Winhoffer, the 2019 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year and captain of the 2020-21 Yale men's soccer team, is part of the Philippines 25-man squad called up for the training camp in Doha, Qatar, and the three remaining matches in the joint FIFA World Cup and AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers in Suzhou, China.

Winhoffer has previous experience representing the Philippines. He captained a national squad in the 2019 AFFu22 tournament in Cambodia and has been part of the country's program since U-15.

"This is a very proud moment for Mark, his family and our program," said Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "I know Mark has had a dream of representing the senior national team and helping them pursue qualification for the World Cup, which is the ultimate honor for every soccer player. The fact he has been able to earn this opportunity without having competed over the past year says so much about his drive and persistence. We will be following him closely and wish him the best."

Winhoffer's mother was born and raised in the Philippines before coming to the United States for college. Mark lived there for five years before coming to Yale and gained citizenship.

Winhoffer, who graduated Yale last Saturday, enjoyed an outstanding career for the Bulldogs. In 2019, he was selected as the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year and was a United Soccer Coaches All-Northeast Region first team selection. In addition, he was named first team All-Ivy and All-ECAC. Winhoffer finished as the Ivy League leader with 23 points (6 goals, 11 assists). His 11 assists were sixth in the nation and one shy of Craig Yacks' school record set in 1997. Winhoffer scored four goals and added four assists in eight Ivy games and two of his four goals in Ivy play were game winners. He helped the Bulldogs to an outright league championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. In 2017, he was the only first year to appear in all 16 games.

Winhoffer also excelled off the pitch at Yale. He was a two-time Academic All-Ivy selection and a candidate for the 2020-21 Senior CLASS Award.

The Philippines is currently holding training camp in Doha and will then head to China for matches against Guam (June 3), China (June 9) and the Maldives (June 15).
