Bulldogs Knock Off UMass Lowell 4-1 in Home Opener

Two Goals from Paolo Carroll Lead Way

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale's dominance at Reese Stadium continues. Paolo Carroll scored twice and Eric Lagos and Kahveh Zahiroleslam also had goals as the Bulldogs knocked off UMass Lowell 4-1 in their home opener.

Yale (2-1) has now won nine straight games at Reese dating back to the 2018 season.

Carroll helped the Bulldogs seize control by scoring twice in a 2:14 stretch early in the first half. The first goal came when Carroll re-directed Jules Oberg's shot past UMass Lowell goalkeeper Christian Miesch at 19:15. First year TJ Presthus also had an assist on the goal.

Carroll struck again at 21:29. Ryan Cote started the play when he put a strong header on goal. Miesch stopped it, but the rebound came right to Zahiroleslam, who one-touched a pass to Carroll, who was alone in front.

The River Hawks (1-3-1) pulled to within 2-1 early in the second half, but the Bulldogs answered with an impressive goal off a corner kick at 64:19. Sigfus Arnason sent a long ball that Lagos deftly headed just inside the far post. It was Lagos's team-leading third goal of the season.

Zahiroleslam capped the scoring with his second goal of the year at 83:16.

Yale out shot UMass Lowell 15-13 and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Goalkeeper Elian Haddock made four saves to earn the victory.

"We are very happy about the result and it's especially nice to be back home at Reese and get a home game under our belt," said Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "We still have a lot of room to improve and I don't think the score line indicates the challenges we faced in the game.  We didn't start the game well and credit to UMass-Lowell for being sharper than we were.  We scored the first goal against the run of play and a very opportunistic chance.  After that, we settled in and played much better but we still had moments where we need to do better in controlling the game and not allowing some of the chances we did."

Twenty-two Bulldogs saw action in the game.

"We still have a lot of work to do, but it was great to be back home and also be able to rotate a lot of guys to save some legs for the next game, and also get more experience for even more younger guys," Stannard said.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday night when they play at UConn.
