COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Two of the most prolific forwards in the history of Yale Hockey will skate for Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.
USA Hockey announced today that
Brian O'Neill '12 and
Kenny Agostino '14 have been selected and will leave their KHL teams for a few weeks to compete for a gold medal. Both Bulldogs are currently among the top 11 in KHL points.
O'Neill, who has nine goals and 42 points in 41 games for Jokerit Helsinki, is about to play in his second straight Winter Games. He made the U.S. Olympic team in 2018, scoring four points in five games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The Yardley, Pa., native became an All-American at Yale while finishing second in career points (163), sixth in career goals (69) and third in career assists (94). One of the key figures in Yale's transformation to national powerhouse under three-time Olympic coach
Keith Allain, O'Neill played in three NCAA tournaments and led the team in scoring his final three seasons, including 2010-11, when the Bulldogs rose to No. 1 in the national polls for the first time.
Though he graduated a year before the national title, he got a championship two years later with Manchester of the AHL. O'Neill was most valuable player of the AHL in 2014-15, leading the league in scoring. He played 22 games for the New Jersey Devils in 2015-16 and is now in his sixth season with Jokerit of the Russian KHL.
Agostino
, a Flanders, N.J., native making his first Olympic appearance, is in his first season with Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo. He has 20 goals and 40 points in 45 games this winter after skating for five different NHL teams, including 24 points in 63 games combined for Montreal and New Jersey during the 2018-19 season, and a few AHL affiliates.
The rare player who jumps from high school to Division I hockey, Agostino played in 134 games, scoring 56 goals and 132 points (10
th at Yale) while helping the Elis win a national championship in 2012-13.
