Kay Competes at BU's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener

BOSTON – Saturday, Sean Kay was Yale men's track and field's sole representative at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Opener. He competed in the 5000m, placing 143rd at the Boston University meet.

This was Kay's first track performance off the back of a stellar cross country campaign, a season which culminated in spectacular Ivy and Regional Championship performances.

At this point in the season last year, Kay represented the Republic of Ireland in the U23 European Cross Country Championships, but this year, he says that his eyes are firmly set on the oval.

At 6:35 p.m., the gun sounded for a competitive and lively 5000m race. Kay's typically aggressive racing style was on full display and a sub-32-second first lap brought him straight to the front of the pack. After narrowly avoiding early jostling and pointy elbows, Kay battled hard and eventually finished in a time of 14:39.79.

As Kay continues his transition to indoor track racing, he will no doubt be confident in faster times and his potential to threaten the elusive sub-14-minute 5k barrier. He now re-joins his teammates in a training block that ultimately focuses on Ivy competition.

Yale's distance cohort will hope to continue their prior progress under Coach Matt Gutridge and make a statement at the Yale-Dartmouth-Columbia meet, held on January the 21st.

The rest of the Yale Track and Field Team will begin their season next Saturday, as Yale hosts its season opener at Coxe Cage.
