Seniors Shine on Senior Night and 5-2 Win over RPI

Gammill nets a pair and Reid has 24 saves to compete weekend sweep

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Seniors had their hands on three goals on Senior Night at the Whale as the Yale Men's Ice Hockey Team honored its Class of 2022 with a 5-2 win over RPI.

Senior Kyle Johnson scored a goal and classmate Justin Pearson handed out two primary assists as the Bulldogs never trailed on the way to a six-point weekend.

"This weekend was huge for us coming off a cold stretch," said Johnson. "We got our momentum back. I loved how the guys really rallied around the seniors. Everyone was on board to bring their best and the results showed it."

Briggs Gammill scored consecutive power-play goals two minutes apart in the third to complete his four-point weekend, and the Yale special teams finished the two-game conference set with four man-advantage tallies and a shorthanded goal.

Kieran O'Hearn put Yale on the board first with his great hand-eye coordination. The first-year defenseman joined in on a rush while killing off a penalty. Gammill saw his blueliner sprinting for the slot and got a little too much air on his pass. It didn't matter to O'Hearn, who got his stick up and re-directed it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

The home team made it 2-0 when Johnson flicked a backhander past RPI's Jack Watson eight minutes later in the opening period, and the Elis never looked back.

"The guys were really competitive, and it was a great sweep weekend," said Keith Allain '80, Yale's Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach. "Our power play came through for us again.

The Bulldogs got 24 saves from sophomore Nathan Reid, who bumped up his level when the team needed it most. The Engineers pulled their goalie with 3:26 left in the third and Reid responded with a few crazy stops, while his teammates put their bodies in front of every puck they could.

"One stat that shows the commitment our guys had to winning was 28 blocked shots, and that tells you lot about their competitive nature," said Allain, whose squad is on the road to face No. 4 Quinnipiac on Tuesday.
