University Park, Pa. – They No. 5 Yale men's lacrosse team played its first road contest of the 2022 on Saturday afternoon and were edged at Penn State, 10-6. The Bulldogs' got a hat trick from attackman
Will Cabrera but the Nittany Lion's strong defense effort held off any Yale rally.
Cabrera netted the first two goals of the game and scored with under five minutes left to make it a two-score game, 8-6, but Yale could get no closer.
After the Bulldogs' opening salvo, Penn State scored five-straight to make it 5-2 after one. It was all Yale in the second however as
Leo Johnson and
Kyle Zawadzki each scored before
Matt Brandau finished one from Zawadzki to make a tie game midway through the period. Both teams' defenses tightened up to make a tie game at the break.
Penn State capitalized out of the half with three-straight scores in the first six minutes of the third while holding Yale from finding the back of the net during the period.
Both teams went scoreless for a near 10-minute stretch from the last PSU score in the third until Cabrera started the fourth quarter scoring. It was the Nittany Lions that had the final tallies though as two scores in the last 3:45 put the game out of reach.
In goal,
Jared Paquette made 16 saves for the Bulldogs while Penn State got 21 stops from Aleric Fyock, who faced 42 shots from the Elis.
