Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 12-ranked Yale University men's lacrosse team bounced back in impressive fashion in its return home to Reese Stadium on Saturday. The Bulldogs came from behind and advanced to overtime which set up
Matt Brandau to score the winning goal with just three seconds left on the shot clock and just 39 ticks overall in OT as the Elis downed (rv) UMass, 13-12.
Â
UMass held leads after the first (4-2), second (7-6) and third periods (10-9) but Yale came up clutch with fourth-period scores from
Will Cabrera, Patrick Hackler and
Brad Sharp as the Bulldogs played their first overtime game of the season.
Â
Brandau made it count with the game-winner in the final minute and registered game-highs with six points, three goals and three assists. He also put five of his seven shots on goal, picked up two ground balls and caused a turnover.
Â
"We've talked for two years now on our identity of being a team that could come back from behind and get a win. Against Penn State didn't feel them; today I did. In the fourth quarter I had that feeling like we are getting better," said head coach
Andy Shay. "To respond to a challenge like that … I'm proud of our guys but we have a lot of work to do. We didn't do everything right in the second half, but we made the improvements we needed to."
Â
The Bulldogs assisted on nine of their 12 scores compared to just three for UMass. Yale also made the most of its extra-man opportunities, scoring twice on three chances while stymieing the Minutemen's lone penalty.
Â
In goal,
Jared Paquette made a career-high 18 saves to improve to 2-1 this season. He faced 58 shots from UMass in the contest.
Â
Six different Bulldogs had multi-point games with
Will Cabrera ranking second on the team with two goals, two assists and four points.
Â
In the circle,
Nicholas Ramsey won 14-of-24 while adding a team-high four groundballs and a caused turnover.
Â
The Bulldogs now start a two-game road swing next Sunday, March 13 at No. 20 Denver before beginning Ivy League play at No. 9 Cornell on Saturday, March 19.
Â
All seven of Yale's scheduled opponents to start the year have at least received votes in the USILA Top-20 poll.
