Special Season Ends with Loss to Purdue in NCAA Tournament

Swain scores 18 points to pace Bulldogs

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – Another memorable season for the Yale men's basketball team came to an end in the NCAA Tournament.

Jaden Ivey scored 22 points and Zach Edey added 16 points and nine rebounds as No. 3 seed Purdue, a team that spent parts of the season ranked No. 1 in the nation, knocked off No. 14 Yale 78-56 before a sellout crowd of 17,500 at Fiserv Forum.

Azar Swain had 18 points to pace the Bulldogs, who finish another remarkable season with a 19-12 overall record and a third straight NCAA bid.

"I'm extremely proud of my group," said James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "We accomplished a lot. My seniors were tremendous."

Swain, Jalen Gabbidon, Eze Dike and Jameel Alausa helped the Bulldogs earn three NCAA Tournament bids, the first class in school history to accomplish that.

"They've given so much of themselves for the betterment of the team," Jones said.

Yale hung with the Boilermakers for much of the first half. A Swain step back jumper put the Bulldogs in front, 16-15, with 13 minutes remaining.

Purdue, though, scored the next 10 points.

Yale was still within striking distance at halftime, trailing 46-33, and then scored the first four points of the second half, including a highlight reel reverse layup from EJ Jarvis.

Purdue's size and Ivey's speed proved too much to overcome. Edey, who stands at 7-foot-4, 295 pounds, was only 4-of-7 from the field but made 8-of-10 free throws.

"I'm proud of our team," Gabbidon, Yale's captain, said. "We were an undersized team playing one of the biggest teams in the country. I thought we played tough."

Jarvis, Matt Knowling and August Mahoney all finished with eight points for the Bulldogs. Knowling and Isaiah Kelly each added a team-high six rebounds.

Yale, which led the Ivy League in field goal percentage defense, limited the Boilermakers to 32 percent from the field in the second half. Purdue, though, was 13-of-14 from the free throw line.
