NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The last time we were in a normal college racing season, Yale Heavyweight Crew was the three-time defending national champion with five consecutive EARC Sprints titles.
That was 2019, and
Steve Gladstone's program was coming off a fourth straight victory over Yale's archrival on the Thames River. After a pandemic hibernation that covered the last two springs, there is a unique feeling around the Elis.
"This is new, this is a beginning," said Yale's Craig W. Johnson '68 Head Coach, who has won the most (14) IRA National Championships. "This is a new group. This is not an extension of our run from 2015 to 2019 because of covid. There are a significant number of guys who have never taken a stroke for Yale."
The Bulldogs, who open the 2022 racing season by hosting Brown on the Housatonic River this Saturday in the Albert Cup, were in Florida over Spring Break tuning up for their much-anticipated return to competition.
"This is a fresh start, and we are optimistic because the guys are working well together despite the stop and go nature of our training and dealing with covid this semester," said Gladstone, who begins coaching his 50
th collegiate racing season on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in a cup event broadcast live on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
The four oarsmen on the roster who competed in the varsity boat in 2019 are
Jack Lopas, the 2021-22 captain,
Andrin Gulich,
Daniel Williamson and
Matteo Sandrelli. The first three of that group rowed in the 2021 Olympic Games, while Williamson was a gold medal winner at Tokyo in New Zealand's eight. Lopas, Gulich and Sandrelli are three of the 11 seniors on an international (13 countries) roster that includes 19 newcomers. Another one of those veterans is
Vlad Saigau, the senior coxswain who has steered the Blue to a pair of national championships.
The Bulldogs and the Bears will race with 15-minute intervals on Saturday as clear skies and temperatures in the 40s are expected in the morning. This is the first of three heavyweight racing days at Gilder Boathouse in April. The others are the 9
th (Olympic Axe) and the 23
rd (Carnegie Trophy), leading up to the May 15 Eastern Sprints.
